Car a/c Won't Hold Charge?

I had the same thing on my Chevy truck. It kinda sucks, but you have to take it to someone that does air conditioning to have them (1) charge the system, (2) use a leak detector to find where the leak is coming from. Once they know this, they can (3) "uncharge" the system, (4) fix the leak, (5) remove all the air from the system (requires a vacuum pump) and then (6) recharge the system again with freon and oil.. Yeah, I know, it seems silly to charge it twice, but that's about the best way to find out where it's leaking from. And the cost will depend on where the leak is - there are a lot of parts on an auto AC system - it could be a compressor, a bad valve, a loose connection, a crack on a hose or in your condenser or evaporator, etc... the tester will tell the tech where the leak is. As to cost? My leak was the compressor; it cost about $165 for the compressor, another $70 for the refrigerant freon, and a few hundred to get the system charged, tested, evacuated, fixed, re-evacuated and re-charged - about 4 hours work. Go to a mechanic that does air conditioning work (it requires specialized training and equipment - not all mechanics can do it!). But believe me, getting it fixed - especially in this heat - was worth it (plus the defroster worked again in the winter!!!)

1. evaporator coil ice buildup?

One thing I can say with relative certainty; If the compressor is running constantly and not short cycling on and off then it is a sealed system problem. Within a half to an hour of turning on a warm refrigerator you should have a full frost pattern across the entire evaporator, not just the lower third. Unlike most units this one brings the refrigerant in to the bottom of the evaporator first. If the compressor is running that tells me all the controls are good because first and foremost they are responsible for turning on the compressor. It is not generating the pressure needed to cool well. It could be a leak but that is unlikely for a couple of reasons. One, a power outage wo not cause leaks. And second, leaks do not fix themselves so it should be getting progressively worse. And unless it was an incredibly slow leak after 4 months I would assume it would not be cooling at all by now. It could be a restriction like a plugged filter/dryer. That would be good news because it would not require a new compressor. Then again the compressor part might still be under warranty, that is if unrelated to a power problem which I would not mention. GE compressors are expensive so if the part is covered that is a big plus. It is possible since you are cooling some that the problem existed prior to the power outage. The unit may have been able to maintain temps but once warm does not cool enough to cool everything down. I would go with that. haha. The likely reason you are not defrosting properly is that the defrost terminator, the bi-metal, is located at the very end of the evaporator run and is not getting cold enough to allow a defrost or shutting off early. Sorry it is not an easy fix. Good Luck

2. can you replace a 10 seer evaporator coil with a 13 seer?

I do not know what someone told you about evaporator coils;...... the seer rating is computed by the running of the condenser unit (which houses the compressor) AND the inside fan and the fact that the two are power usage devices. The efficiency of the cooling effect has everything to do with the energy saving measures built into or added to the structure. If you want to increase the surface area of the evap that you have now, it would just be a matter of properly managing the metering device in order to operate the evap coil the way its designed to operate....

3. Can an auto ac freon leak fix itself?

If your freon leaks out, you need to fix the leak. Leaks can be caused by several things. A bad hose, seal leak, or ruptured metal part, such as condensor, evaporator, metal line etc... The best bet would be to find the leak. Usually the leaking area will leave oil at the point of fault, so you may be able to look over your system by following the hoses out of your compessor, and check all the items you see. Some shps also use a flourescent dye in the system, that can be added when you fill with freon. This will help show a leak when you shine an ultra violet light on the system to spot the area of leak. Another way would be using an AC leak detector that kinda sniffs for any freon leaks ( of course you need freon in your system for it to work ) Now if you were to try and fix a leak with AC system stop leak type of stuff.... This would only work with a seal leak, and more than likely a smaller leak that what you seem to have. In other words, if in fact your system is leaking from a seal it will swell the seals to help in sealing, but that only goes to work so much...

Reviewing Different Parts and Components of Vehicle Air Conditioning
No one hates or dislikes the pleasant air of the car's air conditioner in warm summer days because it can allow you to travel to different places with comfort. The same vehicle allows you to stay cool on a long drive. But these things are only possible when you take proper care of the entire car and especially the AC mechanism. In this post, we look at different parts of vehicle air conditioning system and the care they needThese parts are -Compressor· Just like we humans have a heart, the AC system has a compressor as its heart.· This component is a pump connected to the engine whose main function is to compress the refrigerant from the evaporator coils.· The compressor that acts as a pump is attached to the engine with for compressing the refrigerant gas and circulating it in the entire coil system. NOTE — This part has both intake and discharge sides.Condenser -· The experts of vehicle air conditioning say that this component works almost like a radiator and is very small in size and appearance.· It is installed inside the mechanism to give away the heat and according to the experts, whenever the system is turned "on", it should receive a good supply of air for cooling purposes. Evaporator· The next very important component in the AC mechanism of any vehicle is the evaporator.· Its main is to absorb heat and other than absorbing the heat from inside the vehicle, it is responsible for dehumidifying the vehicle.· The experts of wiring repair Parramatta say that to make sure that this component works fine, it is important that devices like orifice tube are installed. · This device is also very necessary to regulate the temperature of the evaporator, as it is a pressure introducing as well as a pressure regulating device.Receiver· The experts of vehicle air conditioning say that one more very important part of this mechanism is the receiver.· This system employs thermal expansion valves that are actually pressure regulating devices. · The pressure regulating device receives the liquid refrigerant that it needs for functioning.· In order to do so, it must separate liquid and gas that is done by this component. The accumulator· According to the experts, one more very important component of the entire mechanism is called an accumulator. · This component is found using only in automotive air conditioning systems that have an orifice tube as a pressure regulating agent.· The main function of the component is to store surplus liquid refrigerant and it works by restricting the refrigerant from entering the compressor.· The reason why it does so is that too much of refrigerant entering inside the compressor could be detrimental for its overall health. All these and several other parts, in fact the entire vehicle air conditioning system requires proper maintenance on a regular basis to make sure that it continues to work efficiently throughout the summer season. Doing this would also ensure that you will not have to invest a major amount every year in its servicing or repair, etc.Author Bio:Paul Amelio is associated with Automotive, established in the Parramatta district for over 60 years. You could set up an infrared spotlight, but also just any bright spotlight that shines into your samples will do the trick: the darker the color, the greater the absorption. If the water absorbs more energy, then it will evaporate faster. the extra energy will allow more molecules to get the energy necessary to change into a gas. So if you have a strong light source - infrared would be better, but not necessary - and you had several glasses of water, each with a different color, you should have a workable experiment. It is important to have the amount of light hitting each glass fairly equal, otherwise the one with more light will have an "advantage". If you leave the experiment on for at least a few hours, you should easily see the different rates of evaporation by the level of liquid in each glass. You could also place a card behind each glass, with calibration lines, to make it easier for people to gauge how much water is in each glass.
