Ford switched to aluminum beds in its flagship its flagship F-150 pickup in 2015, seeking weight savings. We compare the dimensions, specifications, and capabilities of these two non-traditional truck-bed setups.Pickup trucks make serious cash for their makers, who then pour a lot of that money back into development of future products in search of new technology and fresh grenades to lob at their competition. In 2015, Ford launched its thirteenth-generation F-150 with an aluminum bed and body panels. This summer, GMC will introduce its CarbonPro carbon-fiber bed in the 2019 Sierra. We've compared the specs and claimed advantages of the two beds. Decide for yourself who should come out on top of the pickup wars.Bed VolumeGMC hasn't released final specs for its CarbonPro bed yet, but says that the optional bed will have 1 cubic foot of extra space compared to the Sierra's short steel bed (measuring 5 feet 8 inches), which puts the CarbonPro at 64 cubic feet. The 2019 Ford F-150's short bed (measuring 5 feet 6 inches) has 53 cubic feet of space.Weight SavingsGMC says the CarbonPro bed is 62 pounds lighter than the Sierra's steel bed, a 25 percent weight savings. When the F-150 went aluminum four model years ago, Ford replaced not just the bed but most of the truck's body panels with aluminum, saving about 700 pounds overall.RepairsGMC hasn't sold a single CarbonPro bed yet, so it's too soon to know how costly repairs will be, but the company has taken some steps to avoid headaches for its customers. Technicians who are already trained to work on carbon-fiber elements included in the Corvette can also work on the new Sierra beds, so even early adopters should have no trouble finding qualified technicians. The carbon boxes are bolted onto steel outer panels, which can be removed and replaced without necessitating a repair to the bed itself.This effort to minimize repair costs may have been a response to trouble Ford faced when it debuted its aluminum truck. Dealerships had to invest significant sums in upgrading their shops and training technicians to repair aluminum panels, which dent and deform more readily than steel panels. A 2015 IIHS report found that repairs to a 2015 F-150 cost 26 percent more than repairs to a 2014 steel-body F-150. Customers don't seem to mind; Ford sold more than 900,000 F-series trucks in the U.S. 2018.RecyclingCarbon fiber and aluminum are expensive materials, so Ford and GMC have made efforts to reduce cost and waste by reusing or recycling the materials they use to build their trucks. The CarbonPro bed is constructed of molded sheets of carbon composite. The sheets are trimmed into shape then the trimmings are ground up, mixed with some fresh composite, and molded (on-site) into fresh parts, specifically the stake pockets that are mounted just forward of each wheel well in the CarbonPro bed.Ford collects aluminum scrap from construction of the F-150, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator, all of which now have aluminum bodies, and sends the scrap back to suppliers, who re-form it into aluminum coils and return it to Ford.PerformanceWe haven't tested either of these beds for toughness, scratch resistance, or any number of other factors, but General Motors says that the CarbonPro bed will be superior not just to Ford's aluminum bed but also to GM's own steel beds for dent- and scratch-resistance. GMC claims that drop tests that failed to damage the CarbonPro bed poked holes in competitors' beds. The carbon composite can absorb six times more impact energy than steel, and the fact that the composite is UV-resistant all the way through means that scratches won't lead to rust or corrosion. Of course, aluminum doesn't rust either, so the Ford and the GMC are on equal footing there.PriceEvery F-150 from the most basic to the most luxurious is built with aluminum panels and an aluminum bed. How To Build A Twin Platform BedWe have a guest that will be staying the night, a very messy guest room, and a twin mattress ... on the floor. I decided to get busy and Build A Twin Platform Bed with the thought that one of our kids could use it when they are off at college, renting a room off campus. Eventually, I would like to have a queen size bed in the guest room but this makes sense for now! This twin platform bed was pretty simple and inexpensive to build. It needed to be easy to disassemble so it could be hauled around easily and it needed to be inexpensive because ... this is not meant to be a family heirloom. Nope! Our twin size mattress dimensions are 37-1/2 x 73-1/2 x 11 and I built this bed to fit those dimensions. Adjust your cuts to accommodate your mattress size. Note: My cuts are 2-1/2 shorter than our mattress size. This is because the mattress partially sits on top of the 4 x 4 legs. if you choose not to use casters, adjust the cut of the legs. Our twin mattress has a hard bottom and needed less slats than our Naturepedic mattress did. How To Assemble The Twin Platform Bed This bed is actually pretty simple to build! Make your cuts, according to your mattress size, and sand each piece with 120 grit sand paper. With the Kreg Jig, drill three pocket holes in each end of your headboard and footboard panel. Pay attention to what side of the board you want to be visible and make the pocket holes on the opposite side. Next, attach the headboard and footboard panels to the legs with 2-1/2 pocket hole screws. I placed a 1 x 4 under each end of the panel so the panel would sit back a bit from the 4 x 4 leg instead of being flush. The top of the panel and the top of the legs are flush. The next picture will show what I mean! The headboard and footboard assembled. Pretty basic, right? Then, attach the bed rail hooks on each 4 x 4 leg. I attached mine 2-1/2 from the top and as close to the inside edge that I could, in order to leave room for the side rail. Oh my goodness! These are non-mortise bed rail hooks! I struggled with the mortise bed rail hooks I used on our King Size Farmhouse Bed so I was pretty stoked to find these bed rail hooks! Now it was time to attach the bed slat supports. To do this, I laid the 2 x 4 on the inside of the 2 x 10 side rail and placed my 2 x 2 on top so I would know where to attach the 2 x 4. We want the mattress to sit right on top of this platform bed. I used Kreg Clamps and 2-1/2 Deck Plus Screws to attach the bed slat supports. This part was a bit tricky. The bed rail hooks needed to be lined up just right so the bed rail would sit flush with the headboard and footboard. I laid the footboard and headboard on the ground with the hooks attached. Then, I had my husband hold the side rails up against it, where I wanted it to be, and marked the screw holes. I am glad I did it this way because the hooks sit back a bit on the bed rail in order to sit flush. I would not have known that if I had only measured the correct height. The bed rails were pretty easy to attach and it was all flush ... enough! I used Homemade Stain for my Twin Bed. After the bed was stained, I took it apart, laid the pieces on sawhorses, and finished each piece with a coat of wax. I then attached a caster wheel to each leg. After the wax was dry, I took the bed pieces into the guest room and reassembled it. This is where you would measure the inside dimension of your bed so you can cut your bed slats the proper width. I placed the bed slats and side rail blocks where they needed to go. Next, I attached each block to the side rail support by pre-drilling a hole and then used one self-sinking screw in each block. This was a bit tedious as I used my Kreg Clamp on each block to keep it from moving. We are happy with this simple Twin Platform Bed! It was easy and inexpensive to build and should be a good thing to have around when the kids say goodbye to dorm life and rent a room, when they are off at college.
